Even though I have been born and raised in Europe, I live and work in New Zealand. This is reflected in a lot of my work. A large proportion of my carvings are based on the style that existed here before contact with Europeans. While I try to avoid outright copying of Maori carvings, their influence is obvious, like with most New Zealand carvers. Partly because most of the designs are my own, and partly because I do not believe in “artistic explanations” replacing the quality of the work in question. Traditional Maori names are somewhat inappropriate, as most of my carvings are not really traditional enough, also quite a few are not Maori inspired in any case. I think the quality of work should be able to speak for itself.
